What Is the Science
of Reading?
The science of reading is a body of research that explains how the brain learns to read and the most effective ways to teach early reading skills. Rooted in cognitive science, it defines key skills needed for strong reading development. Key principles include:
Phonemic Awareness: Understanding and manipulating sounds in spoken words
Phonics: Connecting sounds to letters and decoding words
Fluency: Reading with accuracy, speed and expression
Vocabulary: Building word knowledge for comprehension
Comprehension: Understanding and making meaning from text
